UNDER THE BLUE MOON
By Raaki Solomon

You say that I am a king
Invite me to look at, “Stolen Legacy,”
“The Rise and Fall of African Civilizations”,
and, “Before the Mayflower”.
You sing the greatness of Benin
The Glory of Timbuktu
Say that Hannibal, Imhotep and Isis
Are my children.
I learn my Mother is a warrior queen
That I am the Father of Civilation.
You explain how the waters of the Earth
And the shifting of the Moon effect the habits
Of Earth’s people,  nudge me to be ready.
The question are we the queens and kings
Inspire search for my heart
To really see itself….
But, a king, first of all
Needs a kingdom.
All my subjects are now suspect
You're in the wrong place at the wrong time
Had to go down to know up, know a world
Against us, “Naw, Baby, you trippin”.
But, if I be king, I give you gold
So you never be suspect long as you remain
In my domain.  A modern day king
Should have access to a helicopter
A state-of-the-art library
Computers and classified documents

Please, I miss my pet lion.
And where is my limousine?
My royal court?  Who has taken
My executioner?  A king has the power
Of life and death where
Have my assassins gone?
My own royal killer could help
To level a playing field.
But, only the griot remains
They never could spy her
Giving them what they thought they wanted
He whispers in my ear,

"Do it, now.  Do it while
The full moon lights your crooked forest path."
With cold face and wide eyes
Our griot silently mouths the words
"Now.  Do it now."  With guidance
Protection from the Most High.
Most of all a king loves his people.
This extended family really extends,
Most of the subjects are related through
Blood, or marriage, or spirit.
A king has many children
Where is our harvest? Who has taken
Our bread and potatoes?
Where is our fertile
Land for plucking fruit?
You say,  I am a king
Invite me to look...
Where is  my army?
Where is my rook?
